A team of 42 swimmers competed for CMK Swimming Club in Spalding, Lincs on Saturday, against tough opposition in the first round of the Arena League. After two events CMK were in the lead, but Norwich surged ahead in the initial relay events and it was clear that it was going to be a battle for second place with perennial rivals Notts Leander. The second spot changed places no less than four times through the individual events, but CMK increased their advantage through the last few relays and secured the second spot. It means the club stays on track to make the Regional Final in December.
Key team members were 13-year-olds Max Murphy and Lucy Farmer who swam in six events each; both had strong victories in their best events. Club stalwarts Courtney Dos Santos, Emma Joyce and Ben Flaherty all helped the team by coming back from university to swim and win events. Young swimmers Mia Murphy, Nell Blackmore, Katie Murray, Edith Patey, Mabel Painter, James O'Connel, Marcus McAuliffe, Cooper Tomkins, Brayden Ditchfield-Watkins and Will Barry all did well, many in their first swims at this level.
